The ability to view information on hunting maps is one of the most important features of the HuntSmart big game hunting software. Once you enter information with coordinates into the system, this information can be viewed on hunting maps. One thing to remember is that information entered by you is only linked to a map via the coordinates and not to the physical map file itself. For example, if you wish to delete an old map, the information is NOT deleted or effected in any way. Once you import or use another map that has the necessary coordinates available, the information will show on the new map without any modifications from you.
In order to manage hunting maps, this section will give you the ability to import new maps, delete old maps, and disable maps. However, rectified (georeferenced) maps that contain your specific coordinates must be imported into the software. You can purchase these maps from various locations, or download them free from the Microsoft’s Terraserver-USA website using this software.
You can add, edit, delete, or view maps by clicking on the “Maps” icon
which will load the “Maps” item into the working area as shown in Figure 1.

(Figure 1)
Add Map
In order to import a new hunting map, you must click on the (Maps) “ADD” icon
as shown in Figure 1 above which will display the “Add New Map” screen as shown in Figure 2 below. Once the screen is displayed, you have the options to add a new map by 1) selecting a map from a disk file or 2) downloading a map file from the Terraserver-USA website.

(Figure 2)
OPTION 1
If option (1) is selected from Figure 2 above and the “OK” button clicked, the “Open” screen (Figure 3) will be displayed in order for you to select the map file to add.

(Figure 3)
Once you select the map file and click the “Open” button, the software will try to load the map file. However, if a valid world file is not associated with the map file, an error will be displayed (Figure 4) and the map file will not load.

(Figure 4)
The world file is an ASCII file that is used to describe the location, scale, rotation, UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) zone, and Hemisphere of a map, and must be formatted as follows for the HuntingSouth Software:
| Line | Value |
| 1 | meters/pixel in horizontal x Easting direction |
| 2 | rotation about y axis, always 0 |
| 3 | rotation about x axis, always 0 |
| 4 | meters/pixel in vertical y Northing direction |
| 5 | x Easting UTM coordinate of center of upper left pixel in meters |
| 6 | y Northing UTM coordinate of center of upper left pixel in meters |
| 7 | UTM Zone |
| 8 | UTM Hemisphere |
The world file must have the same file name as the map file with a world file extension that matches the image format used for the map file (jpg = jpw, tif = tfw). For example, if the map file is a JPG image and the map file was named “Map1.jpg”, then the world file would be named “Map1.jpw”.
Although this information is supplied, it is not recommended that you create world files for map files unless you are highly proficient in creating rectified (georeferenced) map files with ground control points. The HuntingSouth Software does not rectify map images but uses rectified map images to display the coordinate system.
OPTION 2
If you select option (2) as shown in Figure 6 below which gives you the ability to download a map file from the TerraServer-USA website, the following information must be entered and you must have an active Internet connect:
| • | coordinates |
| • | theme (Aerial Photograph or Topographic Map) |
| • | scale which is defined as ground meters per image pixel |
| • | image width and height in pixels |

(Figure 6)
Upon clicking the “OK” button, the software will use your active Internet connection to try to download the requested map from the TerraServer-USA website. If the website can not be contacted, an error message will be displayed (Figure 7). If the download is successful, then the map edit screen (Figure 8) will be displayed in order for you to edit, and save or cancel the imported map.

(Figure 8)
Edit Map
In order to edit a hunting map, you must click on the “Edit” icon
as shown in Figure 1 which will display the map edit screen as shown in Figure 8. Once the map edit screen is displayed, you will have a number of data fields that can be edited. However, you should be careful when editing a rectified (georeferenced) map file's (top-left and bottom-right corners) coordinate fields (Figure 9), because changing these values will change the display of the coordinate system and/or invalidate the coordinates for the map.

(Figure 9)
When editing a hunting map, you will notice a field called “Use Map” as shown in Figure 8. You can use this field to control when a map will be available in other areas of the software. If the field is check as shown in Figure 10, then the map will be available in other areas of the software. If the field is unchecked, then the map is not available. The default field value is checked.

(Figure 10)
When editing a hunting map (Figure 8), you will notice a field called “File Location”. This field has an underlined blue field value (Figure 11) that is a hotlink, which you can use to change and/or select a map file. If you click on the hotlink the “Add New Map” screen is shown as seen in Figure 2. If you choose option (1) or (2) and click the “OK” button, a new map file will be imported replacing the current map information. However, if you cancel, nothing will be changed.

(Figure 11)
The “File Location” field can also contain another value with the words “no file selected” as shown below in Figure 12. This basically means that no file was imported. At this point, you can click on the hotlink in order to display the “Add New Map” screen (Figure 2) again or click the “Cancel” button.

(Figure 12)
Delete Map
Using Figure 13 as a reference, you must first select the map record on the grid that you wish to delete. Then, click on the “Delete” icon
which will prompt you with a deletion confirmation screen (Figure 14). If you click the “Yes” button, then the map record will be deleted.

View Map
If you wish to view a hunting map while in the map section, click on the “View Map” icon
as shown in Figure 1, which will display the map viewer screen as shown in Figure 15. To learn more about the map viewer, click HERE.
